In 1992, the exhaust system was arranged in this way, starting from the turbo. Down pipe with integral flex pipe, catalytic converter, long pipe with center silencer, rear muffler with tail pipe. 4 units to the exhaust system. On these models the catalytic converter was under the tunnel between the front seats.
In 1993, the exhaust system was changed. Down pipe with integral catalytic converter (very expensive item), flex pipe section, long pipe with center silencer, rear muffler with tail pipe. On these models the catalytic converter was tucked up under the engine oil pan. Where the catalytic converter was on earlier models, there is just a flex pipe.
I believe the reference to "front box(with a note saying without cat)" is to point out that this down pipe fits the earlier model 9000 turbos, rather than an indication that this is a substitution for the catalytic converter.
