Open the aquarium and find the leads to the fan motor, then hotwire them. The leads come into the driver's (U.S.) side of the motor housing. This is much easier than checking the transistor in the fan controller. I replaced my fan motor last year and it was a bear of a job. If I could get somebody to do it for $150, I'd jump at that.
