sometimes, if you do not have a lift to work from, it is almost impossible to get the car to a proper height to remove the transmission by dropping the subframe. Also, proper alignment and bolt removal from the backside of the transmission near the starter can be a real problem. When you pull the transmission, you are most of the way to getting the engine out anyway, so it becomes your choice.
