regular. The follower is more of a click/clatter and is directly related to RPM. Sounds like it is your regulator from your description actually and unexplained a FPR is more noticable inside the car than a follower unless the follower is really bad and then there is no doubt. Some times you can crack the fuel return line and the ticking will go away as it bleeds off some trapped air or lets some in. On older cars some had an anti surge damper that helped the hydraulic tick was just a small trapped air chamber that damped out the hydraulic knock in the fuel rail. Also on some occasions the injectors would feed back surges to the rail and that would cause a light tick take it out and run the stew out of it and it will probably stop.
