ACC blower fan, possible to get out w/o emptying AC?

Is there any way to get this out without dumping the freon? THat is just a bad idea all around, but I don't see another way to get it out. It's an '88 9000T.
The motor has quit working completely now. For a while, it would go full speed for about three seconds then barely blow at all. Is this symptomatic of a different problem than the motor itself?
