Paul, I don't go in for "miracle cures", but when my Aero failed the MOT last year due to a weak mixture (turned out to be that temperature sensor), the dealer gave up and suggested I use some injector cleaner. Well, it didn't fix the problem (car *just* scraped through the re-test), but CO, which had been high, came down a lot, so I suspect the injector-cleaning bit works as claimed. Anyway, the point is that the stuff I used *claims* to help remove carbon from the cylinders, which would remove a potential source of knock from an engine that has seen a few miles. I can't remember who makes it (might be STP?), but I got it from Halfords and it was £12 or £13 for a full-tank treatment (about the most expensive of its type sold there).
Might be worth a try? What you describe sounds like knock. If I put standard unleaded in my Aero, the boost gauge whacks into the red momentarily and "bounces" back down.
