I do have a PhD in chemistry. The MIBK route does not completely dissolve the high molecular weight polymer - a requirement for a strong fusion weld. At best, there are short chain low molecular weight fragments that may dissolve and create a tenuous fusion bond that will hold the crack together, but NOT under stress. In other words, for a gas tank, this route is totally unacceptable.
There were also postings on plastic welding the crack in the washer reservoir. Again, cracks in HDPE cannot be repaired this way if the item is going to be subjected to stress. (A fully weighted tank of gas at over 100 lbs qualifies as stress.)
Gas tanks are nothing to shortchange when it comes to repair. The safety risk factor is too high. Replace the unit. There is no other acceptable solution...
