They are indeed inserts and come with an adapter ring to fit larger struts, like mine. I think the non-Aero suspension uses slightly smaller (by 2mm) struts, and the adapters are not used on these.
The Konis give excellent ride and control, along with the Abbott springs. I have heard people say the Bilsteins are very hard.
