When the relay overheated, OR the socket overhaeted, the damage extended up into the wire. Had the exact same problem. Took the contact and about 3 inches of wire out of a parts car (C900 actually) and the relay, spliced in the wire and had no problems since.
You may be able to salvage the relay. Polish the contacts to a bright shine with sandpaper and then apply a light coat of solder (called tinning) to the copper surfaces.
