how do i know if my alternator or battery is bad Posted by henry helfman [Email] (#787) [Profile/Gallery] (more from henry helfman) on Sat, 20 Jul 2002 21:02:49 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Today I went to start my 1987 9000t and had absolutely NOTHING. Not even interior light. The battery is a 3 year old Die Hard that has always been well charged and has never given a problem in the past. The alternator was replaced about 2 years ago by some mechanic when it went bad with my mother. I recently noticed a wire (jumper?) in the back of the alternator that seemed to loop around from one place to another and it had lost all of it's insulation. I jumpstarted the car and at first the information center was all garbled, but eventually that cleared up and the car was able to start again, though an hour later it lost nearly all of its charge again. When it was running i was getting only 12.1 volts at the battery with my voltmeter and the dashboard displays only about 10. Any ideas before I dump more money into my 185K mile "beater?"
Thanks
Henry
