Silicone grease applied to the spark plug boots serves one major purpose - it prevents damage to the rubber boots when taking them on and off the spark plug. In the high temperature environment of the spark plug recesses in the head, the boots have a tendency to dry out and crack over time - although with new high temperature elastomers, the robustness of the boots is much better now than when pure rubber was used. The boots also have a tendency to adhere to the clean ceramic surfaces of new plugs, making it difficult to remove them without damage after extended use.
The grease can also help prevent moisture and dirt from intruding into contact area in the case of damaged boots. It is really only necessary to make sure that the lips of the boots are lightly greased with silicone grease.
