If you wrench on other cars, you can probably tell where the knock is coming from. And you already know if a main or rod bearing has started to complain, the damage has been done and it's only a matter of time. Do you know how the car has been maintained? Has it had regular oil and filter changes?
There has been discussion here that "234" engines tend to clog oil pick-up screens, and this may be the source of your problem. Checking it requires dropping the oil pan and cleaning it. Although I haven't done that on mine yet, I'm in the middle of a valve job and have looked down there from behind the timing cover. There's a windage tray in the pan, so I suspect it may be a little more complicated than dropping the pan and checking it out. I know there are folks more qualified then I to address this. I've also been told that there is no pan gasket used, and refitting requires the use of a specific sealer (I used Permatex 51813, equivalent to Locktite 518). The 518xx sealers (essentially both the same formula) may have less potential for clogging the system than the more readily available RTV sealers; RTV is for wider gap applications according to Permatex.
Sorry for the rant on the sealant, but it's important. Good Luck!
