Individually owned and operated Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Any experiences with Midas on brakes?, Tom, Wed, 24 Jul 2002 11:16:07 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Every Midas is individually owned and operated, and within each shop there are different mechanics. Just like anywhere else, some have pretty skilled mechanics, and others have guys with a tool set consisting of three sizes of hammers.
Since you've already brought your car in, you're committed. In general, for work I don't do myself, I bring to a place where I know the owner and mechanics. That can be an independent shop, that can be the Midas down the street. Otherwise, I don't trust anybody, even if they're the Saab dealer.
I'm sure your brake job will come out fine. If you aren't going to do the work yourself, I recommend you find a shop that you can develop a relationship with. You do that by giving them small jobs and see if you feel overcharged at the end, or if the wheels fall off after picking it up. That way, if and when something big happens, you know that they aren't going to take you to the cleaners.
The trouble I have with Midas is that a good or bad experience in one shop doesn't translate into a good or bad experience in the Midas shop down the road. I've had poor experiences with some shops - installed the muffler upside down, so the tailpip pointed up! - and some friends that have had bad experiences (drained engine oil, filled autobox with engine oil), so I avoid them. Then again, a friend of mine's son is a mechanic that worked at a Midas for a while, and was very good. You just can't be sure.
Good luck!
