Depends on the dealer Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Have some body damage, to dealer or non-dealer?, Derek, Wed, 24 Jul 2002 11:21:44 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Not all dealers have body shops, and those dealer farm their work out to independents. Of the dealers that have body shops, some are better than others. I had a dealer do some body work once, and the results almost landed both of us in court.
Your best bet is to ask around - co-workers, family, strangers on the street. I'll bet a few of them have had body work done (car body work, that is). Find out who was happy, and who wasn't.
Just because the dealer has a SAAB sign out front doesn't mean the guy in the body shop is good. Ask around, find a good shop. It's just like house renovations - ask for references, and look at the results. You're going to be driving around with this for a while. An unlike replacing an alternator, a bad bodywork fix can cost a lot more to repair - for example, they don't match the paint right, put on too many coats, so now there is a perceptible paint thickness and shade difference between the front and rear of the car, requiring a complete strip and re-spray. Don't ask how I know.
If you've got a nice car and want to keep it perfect, find yourself an artist.
Good luck!
