After you remove the sump (a big job in itself) and the head , you will have to get the ridge around the top of the cylinder bores removed B4 you can push out the pistons & con rods from below .
The ridges exist because the top piston ring , not being level with the piston crown , only wears the cyl bore from slightly below the face of the block . ie the top of the cyl is the original (unworn) bore size since the top piston ring does not rub it .The rest of the bore will be worn by the rings to a larger than original dia..
If you have the engine out of the car it will be easier to remove the sump but the piston/con rod will still have to be removed from the top and the new pistons will go in from the top (after being connected to the con rods) using a "ring compressor" . The empty cyls. will have to be "honed" to remove the glass-like finish caused by the old rings so the new rings will "seat" properly .
You will probablt want to check the con rod journals on the crank for wear and out-of-roundness.
As long as the head is off , a valve job would also be a good idea .
I would recommend the Saab Service Manual 2:1 Basic Engine .
I have never done this job on any Saab but I often consider it . Please let me know how you make out !
