... final gears that actually drive the driveshafts. These are used no matter which gear you are in so the final drive ratio affects all gears, not just 5th. So 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th gears in a car with a 3.61:1 final drive will all be higher than 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th gears in a car with a 4.05:1 final drive.

Yes, you are correct that the lower final drive (4.05:1) will give you better acceleration and lower top speed. However, the top speed limitation is largely theoretical as unmodified 9000s don't have enough power to reach the rev limiter in 5th gear. My '96 handbook tells me you can do 41kph per 1000rpm in 5th gear with the lower ratio. This equates to 246kph or 154mph at 6000rpm, if you could get there. The higher ratio works out at a theoretical maximum of 176mph, which I think would be out of reach of even my modified Aero.

The main effect of the higher gearing in everyday use is better fuel economy and more relaxed cruising. My Aero (2.3) returns about the same MPG on a run as does my 2.0 LPT CSE, both manual transmission, but the CSE has the lower gearing.

I think my Aero would be great fun with the lower final drive. If the gearbox ever gives up (fingers crossed - it's at 167K miles now) I might consider fitting a lower ratio box. My '90 CD 2.3T was a lot of fun around town.
