Automotive specific nuts and bolts

Whenevevr I try to replace ,say , a rusted 6 MM nut or bolt the local fastner store will sell me one that will fit the threads but the socket or wrench size is always bigger than the original ..i.e. I now require a 14MM socket instead of the original 12 MM , even though it threads on properly . The "Fastner Guy" sez the automotive industry uses a smaller head size nut or bolt for any given standard metric fastner . The smaller head size is compensated for by having a flange equal in dia. to the larger "standard" head .
Is this the same idea "Lexus" uses to save weight by putting a dimple in the top of each nut ?
Is this a money grabbing plan by the automotive industry to make sure you have to use OEM nuts and bolts ?
Is there any alternative ?
