By way of background, I have 3 9K's with automatics. I've rebuilt one of the 4HP-18's for my '90 9KT.
When I bought my last '96 AERO, I was looking for a 5 speed, but came across a great car at a great price and opted for the automatic - a consolation prize I thought at the time. This past week, I drove a '97 AERO that is currently listed on eBay. It is a 5 speed with 82+ K miles. This was the first and only 9K with a 5 speed that I have driven.
I don't know if it is representative of all 225 HP AEROs, but I'll take the automatic-equipped 9K with all of its potential attendant problems over the 5 speed. Heresy on this BB, but that's how I feel.
Of course it helps to know you can fix it if it goes bad, but that's just part of the reason. I like the feel of the automatic with the 200 HP engine much better than the shifting with the more powerful motor. In fact, I really couldn't tell much of a difference in pickup between the two different transmission setups.
I also have a Corvette with a six speed. I wouldn't have that car any other way. To me, the 9K is a much more civilized car that seems well suited for the automatic.
Just an opinion...
