At 78K miles, chances are the transmission is still OK unless it has really been abused or neglected. People here seem to say that a lot of auto transmissions go at around 100K miles, with very few going at as little as 80K miles. The best thing you can do is start maintaining it now. Look on Quasi's site (link below) for servicing information.
I recently bought a CSE auto with 100K miles on it and am doing *all* the service items. This includes transmission fluid and filter change, oil and filter change, air filter, spark plugs, fuel filter, brake hoses, brake fluid, power steering fluid, thermostat, coolant, etc., even though I believe the dealer did some of these items just before I bought the car. Now I know where I'm starting from.
Part of the reason I'm doing this is because this car is for my father to drive and he lives about 450 miles and a ferry journey away. I don't mind doing the usual service items in his driveway, but I wouldn't be equipped to do major repairs there.
The transmission fluid and filter are especially important.
