I have learned to shift the car as though it were a manual when I'm looking for more oomph or "racing" someone. Just have to watch the tach and don't let it go above 5000 rpm's, as well as take your foot off the gas when shifting to the next higher gear. This protects the tranny somewhat, by lowering the amount of pressure at the point of shifting. Going from 4 to 3 is basically just taking it out of overdrive. Going from 3 to 2 can really only be done no higher than 55 mph. Anything higher and the tach jumps pretty close to 5000. Going up is another story, but as I said before, just watch the tach. Personally, I feel there's something different about shifting an auto (as far as how to know when), and you should keep your eyes on the tach (as opposed to engine sound and feel when shifting a manual). Maybe it's just a mental thing designed to keep me from blowing up my tranny.
I get just over 19 mpg in mixed driving. On long hauls, I get around 24 to 26 mpg--hence why they say to get a manual when looking for better gas mileage!!!!!
