Now you're getting the idea. I don't see myself as practicing an art, but I'm an engineer (not in the mechanical field, though), so I like to take an engineering approach to these things. This means:
a) Deciding what I want to achieve.
b) Understanding how any upgrade is going to achieve the intended effect.
c) Changing things one at a time so that I can assess the effect of any single upgrade. This is where the different grades of poly bush would be great.
e.g. I have heard it argued that fitting both SAS anti-roll bars and stiffer lower springs to a car increased cornering grip, therefore SAS bars are great for increasing grip. Eh? What did the springs do, then? If nothing, why fit them? If they helped grip, how do we know the SAS bars added any grip?
What you plan to fit should achieve pretty good results, within the constraints of wanting to retain the springs and struts. Expect a little more harshness and for the steering to become a bit more sensitive to the road surface. I haven't used 17" wheels (I still have the 16" Super Aeros). I found Yokohama AVS to give good performance for the price, if a slightly stiff ride and a bit of noise on cornering. I like the Bridgestone S-03s I have fitted now, but they're a bit more pricey. Perhaps the price differential is even greater for 17".
As well as ball-joints and track-rod ends, check the wheel bearings (front and rear) for play. Watch out especially for any slight movement in the front hubs, which can be due to the driveshaft nut coming slightly loose. This happened on mine. The cure, according to Abbott Racing, is to add some threadlock and nip it up with an air tool. That's what they did on mine and it's still OK. Apparently, they have experienced this even with brand new nuts torqued correctly.
