As long as the only light that stays on is the ABS light, the car is safe to drive. You just won't have ABS. The brakes will work just as well, it's just that if you end up with a panic stop, stop on sand, or a very hard stop on wet roads, you can have a tire slip. This is the same as any non-ABS car.

IF you have any other lights coming on with the ABS - like the Brake Fluid light - then I'd have the car worked on before doing any more driving with it.

Chances are there is a loose connector/dirty sensor, possibly a bad ABS sensor. This has no effect on normal braking, just ABS. If the ABS system detects a problem with itself, it shuts itself off.

Remember, all ABS really does is work against your command. You press the brake pedal, with the intent to stop all four wheels. All ABS does is release the pressure on a wheel if it detects it slipping. When ABS turns itself off (light ON), it just won't release the pressure.

If JUST the ABS light is on, I would say the car is safe to drive, and would take the car that's most suited to the trip - carry capacity, comfort, reliablity. I would take a little more car in wet conditions, knowing that if a wheel locks up, I'll need to back off the brakes a little.

ABS is great, and I love it on my cars. But I don't drive assuming it'll be there to bail me out.
