This is just the arcane British way of inventing registration numbers for new cars. Back in 1962 we decided to put a letter at the end of each plate referring to the year of registration. We ran through the alphabet - missing out I, O and Z because they looked too much like numbers, and Q because we used it for something else. Then they did it all again but with the letters at the front of the series. A car cannot carry a registration number that makes it look newer than it is, though making it appear older is permitted.

Naturally, it's not quite than simple. After a while, the British car industry (remember that?) lobbied for the change to take place in late summer, rather than in January when you'd expect. The idea was that people would be so thrilled by the idea of having the latest date letter they would rush out, in what was normally a quiet period for sales, and buy an Austin Allegro or Morris Ital.

This sort of worked, except the Great British Public sensibly bought BMWs, Audis and Volkswagens instead.

We now have a different system with numbers, and these change every six months. If you are still awake, you may like to know that a car with an "N" registration will have been bought somewhere between August 1995 and July 1996. Or is it September 1995 and August 1996 - I need to lie down now, sorry kids.
