To follow up on what Julz asked-
If you hear a squeal on startup, it may be the harmonic balancer (main pulley) going. It's a sandwich of two pulleys with rubber in the middle. If(when) the rubber starts to fail, the two pieces slip a little on startup, making the nasty squeal. It only gets worse (lasts longer) with time. A failed pulley is nasty - you want to get it replaced if that's the problem.
A metallic grind or other gear-line noise can be the starter. I've seen cases where the bolts holding the starter in place have backed out, so the starter is loose. THis can make for some interesting noises when the starter engages or disengages.
Ducks, snakes, and other animal noises, I have no idea.
