I just replaced the" A" with the "M" intermediate shaft bearing housing on my 89 9ks which had been converted to manual by a former owner. As best I could determine, the manual driveline rides about 6mm higher; mismatching trans and housings binds the splines. I never experienced clunks, but had odd vibrations and clearly bad alignment. Others have posted that they broke intermediate shafts. It's smoother now. I wasn't able to find the proper seal for the trans stub shaft before I needed to put everything back together and will have to pull it apart again to fix a persistent leak.
