...but I just installed a TAQ ECu upgrade in my '95 Aero and it has totally transformed the car. I could get 17 psi of max boost on a good day, usually 15-16, but on days with moderate temperatures I can routinely see 23 psi with the present setup. There is a claimed 35hp increase, and I'd say it is at least that much. The previous owner dynoed his Aero at 228hp at the drive wheels, which translates into that neighborhood when measured at the flywheel (net).
What's as remarkable is that driveability is undiminshed and mileage is actually higher. I get 26-28 mpg in suburban driving (city, some highway), and got 28.3 on one recent in-town tankful, something I never could even approach with any of the other four Saabs I've owned or the original Aero setup. Also, first gear boost is attenuated, down to 10-11 psi to ease stress on components and better control wheelspin; second allows nearly full boost, and in 3rd-5th its all there like gangbusters.
One caveat: A 3" exhaust is required, at least as far as inlet of the cat to control EGT's, and 93-octane is the absolute minimum fuel requirement. On hot days I can see evidence of detonation with 93 octane, i.e. reduction of boost, and if 94+ was available here I would use it.
These ECU's are not readily available, and Zeke or Karl are the two best people to contact about acquiring this upgrade. I recommend it highly, and I think it costs around $750 and any like ECU. Supposedly, Saab factory engineers are involved in the programming of this upgrade.
As for power drop off with other ECU upgrades, are you referring to Aeros or other models equipped with Garrett turbos? The Garrett's fitted to '91's and '92's were smaller units that spool up quickly but don't have tremendous output at high RPM's. The Mitsubishis fitted to Aeros don't suffer from this problem, at least not as much. I haven't really watched for it, as I'm usually watching the tach as RPM's approach the red line, but I haven't noticed this on my present car.
