OK, I won't feel bad. Just don't tell me not to feel frustrated...
Thanks, both of you - I couldn't believe I was the only one to have come across this problem, having encountered it now on two '96 9000s which are quite young by 9000 standards.
Car manufacturers use very few custom fasteners (and I don't know of any that make their own). If Saab had used a custom part here, I'm sure they'd have come up with something better, so I'm betting they are an off-the-shelf part (and a pretty inexpensive one at that).
I've been given some pointers to a possible local source for these, so I'll let you know how it turns out.
Regarding getting them out, most of them are blind, which is why Saab used them of course. I don't intend to dismantle the car as far as you have on yours. However, I think I got one out on the Aero some time ago by simply applying a lot of brute force and pulling it through, as you and Anders suggest. When I've got some replacements to hand, I'll give the rest the same treatment.
