Up to my elbows in CV grease. Need advice!

I'm in the process of replacing my inner and outer CV drivers on the driver's side.....currently, I can't get the new inner (Tripod bearing) all the way down on the shaft. I hammered it down with a 1 1/8" socket (hits the bearing, clears the shaft splines)and got it seated to within 1mm! However, I need that extra 1mm to get the circlip seated. I've tried hammering to no avail.
I'm tempted to leave the circlip off since the joint is held on there so tightly, but I'm sure that would be dangerous. Any suggestions? Can I leave the circlip off, or should I leave the car on jack stands for another day and have a machine shop press it all the way on tomorrow?
BTW, the car is a '94 9KCSE, 2.3L FPT.
