Its not easy to check but I can relate an experience I had recently. I noticed that my pedal was getting a little more difficult to depress and started suffering the occasional kick into limp home mode.

Start by removing the kick plate above the pedals. This is done by using a small nail (and hammer if you need it) and pressing in the center pin of the 5 plastic rivets. I've found that you pretty much have to drive them out completely to get the fasteners out. They also have a tendency to then disappear up in the dashboard netherworld, but if you are lucky you can retrieve them. If you don't, keep the fasteners anyway and I found that you can use wooden kitchen matches to act like the pins when you go to reinstall. Just snap them off flush.

What I found on my car was that it was missing the small clip that slides over the shaft (silver) that the black pedal potentiometer is mounted too. This allowed the pedal pot assembly to slide on the shaft and become more difficult to depress. I pushed on the assembly and slid it back down on the shaft and lo and behold the pedal was much easier to push. Then I installed a new clip that I got from the dealer for <$1. It is not easy to install however, and requires a hefty screwdriver and some good leverage. All of this of course while you are crammed under the dash on your back with a drop light burning you occasionally. Good Luck! Now if I could only solve that nagging limp home problem I get when I mash the throttle in hot weather!
