1. The 17mm box end wrench is preferred. Less chance of damage or scratching the finish on the nut. $1 -$2 for a cheap one at the parts store.
2. If as much cable does not come out as the new one has its broke down inside and the motor needs to be disasembled.
3. As I recall the direction is towards the front of the car. Makes more sense with the parts in hand.
If you need to take the motor out to get the rest of the plastic cable the tool kit in the trunk should have the tools.
