The experts at Eriksson say that SAAB does not recommend synthetics in the ZF. Contrary to this recommendation, I run 1/4 - 1/3 synthetic to Dextron/Mercon III. The problem as I understand it is their lower viscosities, which can effect hydraulic shift timing. Many motorcycle manufacturers also do not recommend synthetics because of the on effect on the friction of the wet clutches - similar to those used in automatics.
Some people like synthetics very much. They have many desirable properties - primarily the absence of impurities and the consistent molecular weight of the component molecules. My mixture is a compromise that hopefully takes advantage of these properties while maintaining a rheology that is close to that the transmission was designed for.
Final note...If you drive sensibly and change the transmission fluid every 25K or two years, you really don't need synthetics and again, SAAB does not recommend their use in the ZF.
