Rear Brake Pad/Caliper Question

The vehicle is an 88 9K turbo with a 5 speed. I replaced a dead ABS pump and was bleeding the brakes. To do this I was removing the rear wheels for easier access and also to inspect the pads. I noticed one side had nearly brand new pads while the other side was nearly down to metal. I got a set of pads and soon discovered why they had not been changed. I tried to turn the piston in using the allen and the piston would not move in at all. For lack of a better idea I used a C clamp and applied mild pressure. The piston pushed in easily. I installed the new pads and all seems well but... Obviously the ratcheting mechanism is not working so I am assuming that a problem will surface at some point. Is the mechanism only used by the emergency brake? This car will be used for my daughter at college so I need it to be right. Thanks for any input.
