From 'driver's side', I assume the left-hand side. This is an international board, and I've been burned by assuming LHD.
Assuming it is the left side of the car (looking forward), it probably isn't engine oil. Most of the oily bits of the engine are on the right. Above the boot and steering rack boot is the transmission and brake fluid reservoir.
A lot depends on the transmission. The manual tranny is sealed, so any fluid coming out would be from a bad seal or hose. The automatic tranny is vented on the top, and the transmission cooler is connected to the tranny by a hose on the back top. If the tranny is blowing fluid out the vent, some could get on the boots. If the hose were leaking, it would definately make it to the boots. If your car is an automatic, trace the cooler hoses to the tranny, and wipe a rag down the hoses to the fittings to see if they're leaking.
Another possibility is brake fluid. It's very common to overfill the brake fluid reservoir. The fluid leve should be checked after the car has been started and the ABS pump stops running. At that point, the level should be at the "FULL WITH CHARGED ACCUMULATOR" line, which is well below the top. As the car sits, fluid comes out of the accumulator and back into the reservoir, and the level rises. Sometimes people see what looks like a half-empty reservoir and fill it up, ignoring the line. When the accumulator leaks down overnight, the reservoir overflows.
The other thing to check is the integrity of the boot. The drive-shaft boot is filled with grease. If the boot splits, the grease comes out. Old grease can be pretty thin. It will splash around. If that's the case, as the grease comes out, dirt gets in. The solution is to replace the boot and grease, and hope that the CV joint hasn't been destroyed. Clean the boot with towels and look for cracks and splits.
