High NOx Emission... Happy Ending

The high NOx emission on the 94CS came to a happy conclusion today. To recap..
Took the car to first inspection (late), June 27 on May sticker.
NOx reading: 1,946 vs 937 limit
HC reading: 28 vs. 124 limit
CO% reading: 0.14 vs. 0.69 limit
CO2% reading: is 14.3
O2% reading: 1.0
Since I replaced the cat converter in February. That was my first suspicion. Got a cat from Jim Moncrief for $99. Replaced the cat July 13. Took to inspection July 15.
The emission readings were:
NOx 1648 vs 937 permitted
HC 14 vs 124 permitted
CO% 0.00 vs 0.69 permitted
CO2% 126
O2% 1.2
So I found out the hardway that the cat converter was good. Finally had time this past weekend, the first after taking the car to retest more than three weks ago. Removed the DI cassette. Did not find anything out of the ordinary. Removed the spark plugs. To my horror, all of them have gaps between 1.6mm to 1.8mm, vs 1.0mm called for. The tips have been eaten away. The car is close to 145k miles. I put in 40k miles on a 69k engine installed in 1999. So the spark plugs are at a close to 110k miles. Naturally I replaced the spark plugs.
Took the car to inspection 30 minutes ago. The emission readings were:
NOx 895 vs 937 permitted
HC 22 vs 124 permitted
CO% 0.62 vs 0.69 permitted
CO2% 13.1
O2% 0.9
Now I'll let you combustion experts out there explain why the gap on the spark plug affect NOx emssion.
