Don't worry about the exhaust - check the spark plugs. Engines run lean or rich, not tail pipes. The tail pipe is a cool place, exhaust system wise, so it tends to condense things that don't show up elsewhere. It can look black even with a perfectly-running engine. And the engine will run rich at start-up, giving the exhaust a coating of black that won't go away once things warm up.
If the plugs are a light grey, then the mixture is probably fine. If the plugs are black and sooty, then you're running rich.
Rich running can be due to a bad O2 sensor. It can also be due to a faulty Fuel Pressure regulator. But check the plugs, first.
