If so, what you were hearing was not the wastegate, but the turbo bypass valve, or "dump valve". It is quite possible that the valve has given up due to the extra pressure - not that it shouldn't be able to take this pressure, but it may have been on the way out before you asked it to work for its keep. They do fail.
A new one costs £17.50 in the UK, or about US$26.
