This just happened to me the day before yesterday. (Could it be that the recent heat wave caused it to fail?)
The shift coupler is a rubber block with a two-fold purpose. It isolates the shifter from engine vibrations and it is designed to shear during a front-end collision so that the engine can be deflected under the passenger compartment.
A temporary repair can be effected using two 8-inch plastic "tie-wraps". Make a loop with one and slip it over the top of the assembly (the rubber part and the metal flanges on both sides). Pull it tight with pliers and cut off the excess. Do the same at the bottom.
Order a replacement and replace the original as soon as possible as this is a safety item.
