Clutch pedal was on floor, bled clutch - now ok?

Yesterday while driving to work in my '88 9KT, within about a mile, the clutch pedal returned less and less with each shift until finally it stayed on the floor. I managed to just make it into the parking lot. I limped it home in the evening by pumping the pedal and driving most of the ten miles or so in fourth gear. Today I took a closer look and found no fluid leakage. The hoses all appear to be good as well. I decided to go ahead and pressure bleed the clutch on the off chance that air may have somehow entered the system. Well, much to my suprise, when I opened up the slave bleed screw a massive amout of air came out prior to any fluid. This was with about 15 psi of pressure. Now, after a thorough bleeding, the clutch pedal has returned to its normal position and seems to be functioning correctly. I'd sure like to know where all that air came from. Could this be a possible sign of a failing master cylinder?
