UPDATE on clunking/popping sounds

I finally had a chance yesterday to take a serious look at my front left suspension system. What I saw was simply unbelievable.
First of all, the rear control bushing had a couple tears in the rubber, so I replaced that. Moving forward, I looked at the front control arm bushing. It was still it great shape. What I saw next, though, really opened my eyes.
The supports/spacers that go between the front control arm bushing and the car frame were 90% destroyed. Both bolt holes had cracks going all the way through the metal. The pieces that wrap around the arm of the front bushing were gone. Basically, the only thing holding them together was the pressure of the bolts through the bushing.
I was able to do the job in a couple hours (not including driving time to get new parts). What I can't figure out, though, is what would cause that severe damage to a part. (The same pieces on the right front suspension are fine.)
Just thought I'd update you on the ongoing saga that is my car. *grin*
Thanks, all, for your help. I don't know what I'd do without this BBS.
