Getting if off wasn't bad... I removed that splash piece, unbolted the lower airdam from the fender (only on the side) then popped off the clips holding the airbox shell to the part that came through the fender. Took only a few minutes, all said and done.
I didn't actually remove the airbox, though, I removed all the material that wasn't needed to keep it secured to the car or keep the filter in. I figure this way I can still use the stock-sized filter, though I plan on replacing it with a K&N this week.
I live in Sacramento, so it's generally dry, but I am worried about water. I think I'll take a hole saw to the front airdam and install a duct nonetheless. I agree, it's just safer.
