I've done it two of the three ways - cartridge swap and the 'rebuild kit' method. The last is swap of the entire assmbly. If you know that the turbo is in need of replacement, it's probably too late for the kit. It's intended to replace the bearings and seals of a sound 'core'. And it can't be used on a previously rebuilt unit. This method can't be undertaken casually, unless it's for education and not expecting a usable outcome. The cartridge is the middle ground in terms of price and effort. It's a remove-and-replace proposition, but it still takes some caution and careful following of instructions.
