There could be issues other than the transmission for the
symptoms you describe: shift coupler, motor mounts, transmission
mount. With your mileage, it seems unlikely though. Whatever,
it's not normal. The original '98 transaxle that came with my
salvage yard drivetrain would pop out of first gear. I have a feeling
that the person who had the accident had their hand on the shift
lever on impact. Needless to say, I demanded an exchange for
another transaxle. I was lucky as they exchanged a '97 with 400
miles on it for the '98, which had 10k miles - of course, it also meant
I had to remove and install another transaxle. Anyway, Saab does
warn that one shouldn't drive with their hand on the shift lever as it
will do damage to the transmission - maybe the prior owner was
guilty of this?
