I had the problem in my 94 cde. It just got dimmer and dimmer. Both Trip Computer and EDU display.Important that they both are going dim. I popped out the trip computer and opened it up. With it apart I shorted out the photo sensor to be sure that was the problem. After I figured out that it was I just took the whole thing up to Radio Shack and the nice man sold me a new photo sensor. Took about 2 minutes to repair. The only thing is to have a steady soldering hand. If not I would assume that any electronic repair shop would solder it for you. It was one of the first things that went wrong with my new to me SAAB. Dealer answer- oh about 400 bucks. Radio Shack answer- oh 1.99.
