Not too early indeed, but I hope this helps:
Renault 25: Engine orientation North-South vs. East-West in all the Tipo4 cars, 25 wheelbase: 2718mm vs. 2670 mm on the 9000. 25 rear suspension is different from that of the 9000 and then last but certainly not least: The reliability of the 25 compared to the 9000 makes you wonder if SAAB built them secretly in Japan because the Renaults were nightmarish on that certain aspect. Even its successor, the Safrane, had a delayed introduction because Renault wasn't able to guarantee a constant and satisfactory production quality. But yes they do look alike a bit, although a large five door sedan was fashionable during the mid-eigthies. I remember that some Dutch car-journalists suggested that the 9000 style imitated the R25! Blasfemous! (Although the C-windows dissappeared in '91 on the 9000II, hmmm :-> )
Bottom line: If SAAB had anything to do with the R25 it would have been safer, more reliable, quicker, nicer to drive and still roadworthy after passing 150 K miles, but then the junkyard's owner has to make a living as well.
OK I'm sorry all you Renault fans. Today the Renaults are even more reliable than an average Volkswagen, the 25 had a great ride and it's styling is nice, especially since it's so familiar with that great Swedish fivedoor.
