Two things work for me: A product called Protek-Hans (or something like that)in a tube. Rub on and let dry before starting. Creamy, but dries to protect from grease. May disolve if you use CRC or WD40 or solvent, but for grease and normal dirt, it works. Wash hands afterward, scrub a little, and you're ready for the public. Also, fill up under the fingernails with soap. Scratch a cake of soap. The soft side from the bathtub cake. Really fill up those nails. It stays there and the real grease has trouble getting in. It also washes right out when you clean up.
Great to read about your success. Your experience with the antenna reminds me of my early dalys of DIY. I was really naive. Like disconnecting the ground cable on the battery first. Really big sparks and weld marks on the wrench when it hit something while disconnecting the + cable. There is some saint that takes care of novices. Good luck. And dont wear jewelry, rings, etc. when working with mechanicals. Too many horror stories re: things getting caught or electricity fries you or the jewelry. After 45 years or so, it's still fun. But I still make mistakes.
