I don't have an engineer's straightedge, but I have one Stanley straightedge which appears to be perfect, having tested it against more expensive straightedges. Swedish Dynamics also attested to the head being flat. I just checked it again tonight, putting a light behind the straightedge. Just flecks of light coming through around the pitted areas.
The pitting is not especially deep, and the head doesn't appear to ever have been machined. on the head, the areas around each combustion chamber have pitting where the metal bands of the head gasket makes contact. However, apparently only cyl 3 leaks. Since I don't want to have them remove too much material, I wonder if a less than perfect surface would be adequate. How much combustion chamber volume can you lose by maching the cyl head? Is it really a problem?
