battery and smoke

Interesting couple of days with the '89 9kT... Coming home from the airport where the Saab was left during a 4-day trip, I started her up and the battery light came on. The dash lights were dim. The volt meter read 8.6. I thought that I could get home and that the trip would charge the battery. 35 minutes later she died on an off ramp. Would not restart, could not jump. Even left the cables on for a couple of minutes and nothing. I supposed the battery was dead.
I went to K-Mart but they did not have the exact battery. I needed to get to work the next day and it being 1 A.M. on labor day, I did not have much of a choice so I got a battery for an older model that was the same pyhsical size.
She started up, but the battery light was still on. She made the 25 mile trek to work with just one issue. About 2 miles into it, she stalled and did not want to start up. When I tried, smoke came from the air vent. I popped the hood to find the source of the smoke and saw nothing (my battery cables are a bit frayed though). I then gave the international signal for confused, stranded motorist, I scratched my head.
I decided to try one more time and she started and I made it the rest of the way to work.
My questions: What the hell is going on? How do I fix it? Am I trashing my car by not using the OEM battery?
Thanks,
Bob
