If the specialist's arguement were valid, it would imply that new transmissions would initally shift harsh since they produce (according to this argument) the highest pressures.
The harsh shifting change is likely due to the wrong spring in the "A" accumlator, not increased presssure as described. Whe I rebuilt my transmission, I used the valve body from my '90 2.0L turbo in conjuction with the clutches from a '91 2.3L after I added the additional frictions. It turned out (thanks to the guys at Eriksson for the information), that ZF made an internal change to the fluid passages with the 2.3L. With the stock 2.0L "A" accumulator spring, the shifts were quite harsh. When I changed the accumlator spring to the one Eriksson recommended for the clutches I used, the shifts smoothed right out and the transmission now shifts perfectly.
When a non-ZF shop (or in my case a DYIer) rebuilds a transmission they sometimes miss a fine point like this. If your rebuild was put together from parts from different styles of transmission, there is likely a mismatch between the valve body accumulator spring and the clutch hydraulics that is causing your problem. IT IS NOT NORMAL AND WILL GET WORSE - i.e., it is not self-correcting as implied by the specialist as the "pressure drops" with usage.
