I assume you checked the oil and the level is fine. An overfill will cause some wierd things to happen. Are you sure the noise is from below the DI cassette?
Try to isolate the noise to see if it could be coming from the side of the motor where the belts are. Your squealing belt could have been from a dying tensioner. How did the belt get off a groove on the ac compressor in the first place? Now that tension has been reduced by straightening out the belt position on the ac compressor, the tensioner might be making noise. Or it could be another accessory. The waterpump recently died on our Chrysler minivan and it was making a similar noise. The pulley was visibly wobbling because the waterpump shaft bearing was worn out. It sounded horrible. A thumping, ticking, grinding noise.
The bottom line is that it sounds more like a belt/tensioner/accessory problem to me, than a catastrophic engine failure. One sure test is to run the motor without the belt (for a minute or 2, when cold)to see if the sound is gone.
