First I would make sure the problem is in the transmission. The cable could be electrically faulty. Mine got wrapped around the steering and tore in half. I repaired it but failed to note that while apart, the electromagnetic pickup had unscrewed itself from the transmission and was no longer turning. If you still suspect the drive gear, you can unscrew the pickup from the top of the transmission, stick something into the top of the drive gear that fits snug (about 1/8" square) and turn a road wheel (while in gear) while noting if the drive spins. This can probably be done with the engine running too. If it doesn't spin, the drive is easy to replace. At least on an '88 9000. Put only the RIGHT wheel on a ramp (or jackstand) in order to keep the oil from running out of the speedometer drive hole. This is located on top of the differential section of the transmission toward the rear and can be accessed from underneath (center, near the rack and pinion at the firewall) or from overhead (more difficult in my opinion). There is a 13 or 12mm bolt to the side of the drive hole. Take that out and the nylon drive gear can be pulled out (upward) by grabbing the threads lightly with channel lock pliers. It has an O-ring. A new gear isn't worth more than about $10.00 which should mean Saab will let one go for about $50.00. I'd be surprised if it's bad, though. What is there to tear it up? The cable is much more trouble-prone. I had mine quit once and removing and replacing the same cable fixed it.
Incidently, the cable has a connector (two wires, black & white) immediately behind the false bulkhead just forward of and right of the clutch master cylinder (or about 10 inches to the right of the computer if yours is an auto). Just forward of the wiper motor, too. Make sure THAT's still connected. The electromagnetic pickup DOES have a resistance so you could read from this connector into the transmission end without getting under the car too. Resistance means the wire is NOT broken; nor is the coil open. Keep in mind that my car is an older model and the above may be perfectly useless to you. Such advice is easily worth what you've paid for it, however.
